A QUESTION OF VOLITION
In the article MAY THIS NOT BE AN OMEN (le QL
no 32), Ralph Maddocks says about sales of high
technology equipment to other countries:
The justification offered by most
of the companies involved in this trade is identical to that advanced in
the arms trade, i.e. that the technology is neutral. Technology can never
be neutral, there will always be some monster waiting around the corner
to use it for some sinister purpose.
This is the same argument that is used to limit ownership of guns, pretending
that guns present an inherent danger in themselves, blanking out the
fact that there is a volition controlling the finger that controls the
trigger of the gun. In the case of high-tech surveillance equipment, database
equipment and all other technologies, it is exactly the same. There is
always a volitional act at the beginning of every chain of event that uses
technology as a tool of oppression. Oppression did not begin with technology,
it was merely made more efficient with it, as the ultimate goal of technology
is to make tasks easier.
Our concern (and you hint of it at the end of your article) is that we
should keep our politicians under close watch for they are the volition
that initiates all those abuses.

BIG BROTHER EST

J'ai
bien ri en lisant l'article SUR LES DANGERS DE L'HIVER
de Brigitte Pellerin (le QL no 32). D'autant
plus que quelques jours avant, un coroner a remis son rapport sur la mort
d'un skieur dans une piste de ski en sous-bois, une spécialité
des stations québécoises.
Or, le dit rapport demande à l'Association des stations de ski d'envisager
ni plus ni moins que d'emballer tous ces arbres afin d'éviter des
chocs mortels, mais à titre transitoire. À long terme, il
recommande de planter en avant des gros arbres quelques petits conifères
en forme de triangle afin de détourner les skieurs!
Que dire de plus?
Big brother est mort, vive BIG BABYSITTER !
